Templafy VSTO and Web Add-ins are visible in Office applications

About this article

This article explains the phenomena of the Templafy Library Web add-ins remaining in the Office Ribbon when the Templafy VSTO Library add-ins are loaded and available in the Office application. Templafy reported the bug which can be found here.

Microsoft feature

Templafy manifest versions 1.0.0.7 and above leverages the use of Microsoft functionality which allows for the Templafy Web add-ins to become hidden if the equivalent VSTO add-ins is installed and present. This functionality allows for Windows users to see only one Templafy Library add-in (VSTO Library add-in on the left of the ribbon) rather than both the VSTO add-in and Web add-in (on the right of the ribbon).

To find out more about this feature, please see the following Microsoft article: Make Office add-in compatible with existing com-add-in.

Technical details from Microsoft

The equivalent add-in feature is supported by the following platform and applications

  • Excel, Word, and PowerPoint on Windows (version 1904 or later)
  • Outlook on Windows (version 2102 or later) against a supported Exchange server version
    • Exchange Online
    • Exchange 2019 Cumulative Update 10 or later (KB5003612)
    • Exchange 2016 Cumulative Update 21 or later (KB5003611)

The issue

Depending on the Microsoft Office version and build that is being used, there have been reports where this Microsoft equivalent add-in functionality is not functioning as documented and therefore resulting in both Templafy VSTO and Templafy Web add-ins to display.

The solution

There is currently no officially published solution and no timeline as to when this will be permanently fixed.

As a result of internal testing, it has been preliminarily identified versions and builds of Office in each update channel where the equivalent add-ins functionality appears to be functioning correctly. It is recommended to conduct your own testing to validate the below findings.

Update channel Versions with problems Versions with no problems
Current Channel <= Version 2112 (Build 14729.20260) >= Version 2201 (Build 14827.20158)
Monthly Enterprise Channel <= Version 2303 (Build 16227.20318) >= Version 2304 (Build 16327.20324)
Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview) <= Version 2302 (Build 16130.20714) >= Version 2308 (Build 16731.20234)
Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel <= Version 2302 (Build 16130.20810) No known version

Known work arounds

Please be aware that the below work arounds may not work or be suitable in your case.

  • Open Office Add-ins from the Insert Tab from within the ribbon. Click Admin managed followed by clicking the refresh button. This will trigger the Web add-ins to become hidden correctly however they will re-appear again if the Office application is restarted.
