How to use Self-Service Group Membership in Templafy

Microsoft's native self-service group membership service gives individual users the ability to setup their own security or M365 groups in Microsoft Entra ID. These groups can be joined by other users and can then be used to do targeted distributions of Templafy modules, add-ins, and other functionality. This article explains how to configure a self-service group and then how a company can use this group to deploy Templafy functionality.

Prerequisites

The following settings must be enabled within the Group settings page (accessible only to Entra ID Admins).

  • Security groups.
  • Microsoft 365 Groups.

Create a M365 or Security Group that Users can Join

  Note

The primary difference between Security groups and M365 groups is that Security groups can contain different kinds of objects within Microsoft like users, groups, devices, etc. while M365 groups can only contain users.

  1. Go to the Microsoft My Groups page.
  2. If the above configurations were made properly, there should be two new options in the Overview page, Create M365 Group and Create Security Group.

  • If you want to create an M365 Group, click Create M365 Group.
  • Enter the Name, Description, and Policy for the group and click Next.

  • You will then be presented with information about your new M365 group.

  • And now that group exists in Entra ID.

Joining a Self-Service Group - End-User Experience

When a user is in the My Groups section of their Microsoft account, all they need to do is use the search functionality to find the group and join it (shown in the video below).
