About this article

There is a known Microsoft issues which causes Office to freeze in specific situations and causes the Templafy task pane to appear empty or blank. This article will explain the issue and potential solutions to solve it.

Issue description

Currently, there appears to be a bug with Webview2 , which causes Office to freeze if it is opened on, or if the Office Window is moved to a monitor that is set to a different DPI Scale than the primary monitor. This issue is not exclusive to multiple monitors and may also be experienced with with using a single monitor or just a laptop screen. In all cases, please try the steps below.

Potential solutions

Upgrading your Windows and Office versions

Upgrading your Windows 10 and Office versions to the latest versions will resolve the issue.

Required versions:

  • Windows 10 Build +1803
  • Office Build +16.0.9330.1000
  • Office 365 ProPlus 1905 (Build 11629.20214) or earlier*
*It has been found that the bug was re-introduced in later versions and then subsequently fixed in the below versions.

Insider Channel: Version 1907 (Build 11901.20080) +
Monthly Channel: Version 1907 (Build 11901.20176) +
Semi-Annual Channel: Version 1902 (Build 11328.20392) +

Note: If you have previously selected the "Optimize for compatibility" and have upgraded to the same or newer version of the above, you may continue to see the blank taskpane. Please switch back to the Office default option "optimize for best appearance".

Optimize for compatibility setting

If upgrading your Windows is not possible, an immediate fix is to change your "User Interface options" in Office (per application) to "Optimize for compatibility".

The above solution can be applied by adding the below Registry Entry via GPO: https://download.templafy.com/HKCU_OfficeOptionCompatabilityView.reg

Setting the DPI scale in the case of single or multiple monitor use (Optional)

Ensure all monitors are set to the same DPI Scale. To change this go to:

  1. The Windows Display settings
  2. Once the scale has been changed on the Primary monitor, ensure that it is matching on subsequent monitors, as well (Step 3 in the picture). If only one monitor is being used, set it to 100% (Recommended) from the dropdown.
