What types of document protection are supported?

About this article

This article explains what types of document protection are supported in a Word template.

Prerequisites

Supported types of document protection

Restrict Editing

When Restrict Editing is clicked on the Developer tab, the form below is opened:

You can always create a document. If Update document is supported depends on the type of restriction selected:

Type of restriction Create document Update document
Limit formatting to a selection of styles Supported Supported
Tracked changes Supported Supported
Comments Supported Not supported
Filling in forms Supported Not supported
No changes (Read only) Supported Not supported

When Yes, Start Enforcing Protection is clicked, this dialog is shown:

Templafy only supports the protection method Password.

The protection method User authentication is not supported. If you upload a template to the Admin Center with this protection method enabled, the message File contains corrupted data will be shown (because the file is encrypted):

  • The protection method User authentication is only available with the options Comments and No changes (Read only).

Save As dialog

The 'Save As' dialog from Word also provides the ability to protect a document when General Options is selected:

  • The option Password to open (marked red in the General Options form above) is not supported. If you upload a template to the Admin Center with this option enabled, the message File contains corrupted data will be shown as mentioned above.
  • When the option Password to modify (marked blue) is enabled then you can upload the template to the Admin Center. However using this option is not recommended, because when a user creates a document a pop-up dialog will be presented to the user (asking for a password) to be able to create the document.
